Things to Do
Hot Springs National Park is in an urban area, surrounding the north end of the city of Hot Springs. Be aware that many businesses in the area say they are in "Hot Springs National Park" when they actually are not; the city's post office name is Hot Springs National Park.
The hot springs only emerge in the Bathhouse Row area downtown because the town grew around the hot springs.

Crystal Hunting
Many "dig-your-own" crystal mines are available in the Ouachitas with most of the mines located in the area around the resort city of Hot Springs and the small Ouachita Mountain hamlet of Mount Ida. The mines consist of pits and exposed hillsides where backhoes and bulldozers have removed the soil and clay in search of the quartz veins that run through these ancient mountains. Whether you are a beginning digger or an experienced rockhound, you are sure to find a spot at the various mines well suited for you.
If you want to venture off on your own, the Ouachita (wash-shi-ta) National Forest is open to the public (including rockhounds). You are welcome to pick up crystal from surface exposures for your personal use but not for resale. Crystal is found almost everywhere you see white quartz rock on the ground. The Forest Service Crystal Vista recreation site is an old mining claim that is also open to the public. I recommend you stop by the Womble Ranger Station on the edge of Mount Ida to get a map and other helpful information.
Several of the privately owned mining claims let the public dig for a fee. The average cost is $10 to $20 per day, per person, and you get to keep all the crystal you dig. You can also contact the Mount Ida Area Chamber of Commerce at 870-867-2723 for information and brochures.
