I was initially looking to spend about $150 on anything other than a KitchenAid or a Cuisinart (they seemed out of my price range for the holiday centric baking I do), so I figured a general GE or similar tilt head would be just the ticket. I looked around online for what was availble and just couldn't find anything I loved, or even liked, in that category and had to reset my expectations on what I was willing to spend and what I really needed.
All this translates to a big motor and a big bowl. I thought really seriously about the 5 quart mixer (you can get it for under $300) - it comes in a tilt head and with wet mixes like brownies, I really like to be able to just prop the head up and let the beater drip clean. A lift mixer is a bit more inconvenient IMHO because you've usually got to drop the beater or paddle before you can remove the bowl, which really doesn't fit my ideal, but the 6 quart 575 watt Professional 600 series is really what the situation called for. It's an extra $100, but supposedly when you buy Kitchen Aid you should get what you want to live with for a long time. I purchased mine from http://www.everythingkitchens.com/ and got the best deal out there with free shipping. Oh and it's red.
I couldn't be more pleased with it.
